In the lore of Greek myths, naiad Pirene was grief-stricken by the death of her son, Cenchrias. She dissolved into a fountain of tears outside the gates of Corinth. It was said the essence of a naiad was tied to her spring; she could no longer exist if the spring dried up, as is often the case with inspiration and poetry. Pirene’s fountain was one of three springs associated with Pegasus, and was sacred to the muses, who drank of the waters for fresh inspiration.

At Pirene’s Fountain, it is our hope that we can share of each other’s knowledge, and in the spirit of Ancora Imparo –
“ I am still learning,” open our hearts and minds to inspiration.


Guidelines:

  1. Poems with lyricism and imagery, interesting language & emotional resonance.
  2. 3–5 previously unpublished poems with a brief bio.
  3. Poems pasted in body of email unless special formatting requires a word attachment.
  4. Reading Period: May 15th–June 30th.
  5. Timely withdrawal notices appreciated if submitting simultaneously.
  6. We request First North American Serial & archival rights, and the right to include work in future anthologies. All rights revert back to author after publication.
  7. We nominate for the Pushcart Prize, and award the Liakoura Poetry Prize with a certificate and $100 check.
  8. Payment is a contributor copy of the journal.

Pirene's Fountain and its parent company, Glass Lyre Press maintains zero tolerance for plagiarism. Passing off another's work as your own is a very serious offense. As publishers, we automatically extend copyright protection; plagiarism violates such protection and impacts us all, particularly the writer whose work is infringed upon. Accordingly, lines used from other writings or lyrics should be placed in quotation marks and proper credit given below the poem.

By submitting to Pirene's Fountain, we take it on faith that your work is your own; further, that 1) you hold us completely blameless and 2) you take full responsibility in case of any action resulting from a plagiarism charge.

Any author submitting work found to be inauthentic will be contacted and required to sign a legal document absolving us from any responsibility. The works in question will promptly be removed from our site and further submissions from this writer denied. While we have no desire to vilify the reputation of an author, we cannot withhold our email records from the original author of a plagiarized work who wishes to launch an investigation.
